Backyard barbecues, days at the beach, and fireworks. Here comes the 4th of July!

With such grand expectations, holidays can be a mixed bag when it comes to visiting loved ones. Some families have long-standing traditions that are complicated by the needs of aging parents. Never fear – There are plenty of ways to celebrate the 4th of July that incorporate summer excitement and the needs of everyone in your family!

Hosting a celebration at your home can be a great way to celebrate the day and keep it comfortable for all. If that’s not an option – San Diego has plenty of fantastic opportunities to have fun this Wednesday!

Ideas for celebrating at home:

Host an indoor/outdoor barbecue – Host a barbecue in your backyard, and set up stations for guests to enjoy outdoors and indoors! Outside, everyone can enjoy cooking up hotdogs and burgers. Set up a snack station indoors with cold foods like potato salad, and chips and salsa. This will keep a steady flow of guests mingling inside and outdoors. That way, seniors can enjoy the sun as they wish, and take a break indoors without feeling excluded. Everyone enjoys the festivities!

Have a movie night – A great way to make your celebration inclusive for the whole family is by enjoying a patriotic film (Forrest Gump anyone?) in the evening. Kids can help by handing out popcorn and “concessions.” Elders in the family can enjoy the day in a comfortable environment. Then as the night winds down, you can enjoy the Fireworks display on your favorite local news station.
